The government is advancing its plans to establish a medicinal cannabis industry focused exclusively on exports. This initiative aims to diversify the economy, create new job opportunities, and position the nation within the thriving global market for medicinal cannabis products.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, provided an update on these developments during a recent parliamentary session. He emphasized the significant economic potential of tapping into the rising global demand for medicinal cannabis. Mr. Kamikamica mentioned that the industry is designed solely for export, intending to broaden Fiji’s economic base and introduce new revenue streams.
“The global medicinal cannabis industry is expanding rapidly, and Fiji has the opportunity to become a major player,” Mr. Kamikamica stated. He added that establishing this industry would create a vibrant ecosystem supporting agriculture, manufacturing, and research, while also boosting job creation.
This initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader economic strategy of increasing export revenues and expanding beyond traditional industries. Since the Cabinet approved the initiative in August 2023, a multi-agency taskforce comprising 12 government departments has been working diligently on the project. Nationwide consultations and a feasibility study have been conducted, and the focus has shifted to developing the necessary legislation.
Between October 9 and November 28, 2024, the government held 17 consultations across various divisions of Fiji. Over 500 participants, including community members and stakeholders, contributed their perspectives, with a convincing 75% supporting the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Most supporters were male farmers aged 36 to 45, who recognize the potential benefits of this industry.
Mr. Kamikamica stressed that this initiative isn’t solely about cannabis; it seeks to empower local communities, particularly in rural and maritime regions, by engaging them in a promising industry. This, in turn, could lead to agricultural development and job creation in areas that need it the most.
Looking ahead to 2025, the government aims to present the bill for this industry, despite some delays in the legislative review process. Mr. Kamikamica reassured that the government is dedicated to finalizing the legislation, acknowledging the challenges regarding logistics and timing while assuring that security measures will be implemented to prevent theft and illicit market activities.
Once finalized, the medicinal cannabis industry is expected to significantly enhance exports, create new job opportunities, and facilitate advancements in medicinal research. This marks a vital step for Fiji’s economy and its aspirations in global markets.
