Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, addressed the urgent need for climate mobility during the High-Level Opening Session of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum in Germany. He highlighted that 42 communities in the nation have been identified for future relocation due to the impacts of climate change, with 17 communities prioritized by the government and two currently in transition.

Bulitavu reported that six communities have already been relocated, demonstrating the pressing need for action in response to rising sea levels and climate impacts, a reality faced by the people of Fiji and many Small Island Developing States. Emphasizing global solidarity, he urged developed nations, particularly Germany, to support Fiji’s initiatives, including the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF) and the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund.

Furthermore, he underscored Fiji’s leadership in climate mobility strategies since 2012, showing a commitment to enhance resilience and adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change. He mentioned ongoing efforts through the Pacific Climate Mobility Initiative aimed at developing a national blueprint for climate mobility, reinforcing collaboration with international partners and integrating local financing models under the Green Climate Fund.

These initiatives reflect Fiji’s proactive approach to combatting climate challenges, bolstering community resilience, and striving for a sustainable future amidst adversity. As global awareness increases regarding climate mobility, there is hope for more robust international cooperation and support to assist vulnerable communities facing these challenges.

Fiji’s appeal for collaboration and comprehensive support underscores the importance of long-term funding in addressing the realities of climate-induced displacement, aiming for solutions that honor human dignity and improve safety for affected populations. This consistent global engagement can foster resilience and promote sustainable development across Pacific nations.
