Tropical Cyclone Rae made landfall in Fiji yesterday, wreaking havoc on Cicia Island in the Lau Group with strong winds and heavy rain. Reports from Dr. Rusila Tikoitoga, the medical officer for Cicia, indicate that the storm caused roofs to be partially blown off homes, damaged farms, and resulted in floodwaters entering the village. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the cyclone’s fierce conditions.
By 6 PM, the cyclone was located approximately 80 kilometers east-northeast of Moala, about 70km south of Cicia, with wind speeds reaching dangerous levels up to 90 km/h. The cyclone is expected to continue moving south-southwest, and residents have been advised to be vigilant and prepared for further weather disturbances.
Dr. Tikoitoga reported that four families have taken refuge in the school’s evacuation center while other residents remain safe. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has activated 18 evacuation centres across the Northern Division, providing shelter for communities likely to be affected by severe weather.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings across multiple islands, as flooding and heavy rainfall are prevalent concerns. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of community solidarity and preparedness, as seen in historical weather events, which have highlighted the value of uniting for collective safety.
Despite the challenges, the situation embodies the resilient spirit of the Fijian community. As local leaders call for vigilance, many are taking proactive measures to secure their properties and help each other through this storm. This resilience provides hope that together, communities can weather this adversity.
The Fijian public is encouraged to stay informed and prepared by reaching out to local emergency contacts for assistance, ensuring a concerted effort to face the natural turmoil posed by Tropical Cyclone Rae.
