The Fiji Baby Pearls netball team is vigorously preparing for the 2025 World Youth Cup in Gibraltar, scheduled for September 19-28. Under the guidance of team manager Lusiana Rakavono, the team resumed training on May 13 after a tour in Townsville and Brisbane, marking their fifth week of preparation.
Rakavono highlighted the innovative training strategies being employed, such as scrimmaging against the men’s netball team to enhance players’ speed, strength, and decision-making under pressure. This approach aims to prepare them for the elite competition they will face during the World Cup.
In addition to rigorous training, the team has engaged with local communities, including a visit to the Namosi Netball Association’s opening day event. This grassroots outreach allowed the players to coach local teams, which not only benefitted the community but also helped the players connect with the foundational roots of the sport in Fiji.
As the pressure of team selection intensifies, Rakavono emphasizes the importance of consistency and focus among the athletes, encouraging them to trust in their unity and shared goals. The Fiji Baby Pearls will compete in a challenging Pool D against South Africa, Malawi, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Previously, articles noted Fiji’s rising prominence in youth netball and how participation in international competitions serves to inspire younger athletes. The Baby Pearls not only aim to showcase their talent on a global stage but also to elevate the profile of netball in Fiji, fostering a new generation of athletes passionate about the sport.
Overall, with relentless determination and a strong sense of community, the Fiji Baby Pearls are on a promising path to making an impactful statement at the upcoming World Youth Cup, showcasing their dedication to netball and commitment to excellence.
