Ian Simpson, a trailblazer in Fiji’s helicopter industry, was honored with the Visionary Award at the prestigious ANZ Fiji Excellence Awards 2024, celebrated at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort. This award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate exceptional foresight and innovation in reshaping the tourism landscape in Fiji.

Upon receiving this accolade, Simpson graciously acknowledged his wife, Tippy, and his dedicated staff, highlighting their shared vision that facilitated this recognition. His journey began in England, where he trained as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy until job cuts necessitated a change in direction. Pursuing new opportunities, he arrived in Fiji during the early 1970s, marking the start of an illustrious career.

Simpson’s professional ascent began with Helicopter Utilities, which later evolved into Air Fast. In 1976, he and his American partner, Ed Chopot, established Pacific Crown Aviation. He eventually launched Island Hoppers, which has become integral to Fiji’s tourism sector and vital for medical evacuation services.

With deep knowledge of Fiji’s rugged interior and years of devoted service, Simpson is highly esteemed in the aviation community. His contributions also include conducting countless medivacuations, directly saving numerous lives. Representing the first Fijian-owned helicopter company, his legacy paves the way for future aviation professionals.

Now retired, Simpson and his wife reside on the Sunshine Coast, while their son, Nigel, upholds the family legacy as chief engineer at Pacific Crown Aviation in Australia.

Simpson’s recognition at the ANZ Fiji Excellence Awards underscores his significant influence within Fiji’s tourism industry. His achievements parallel those of other notable figures, such as Penioni Fakauliafa, who also received accolades for his exemplary contributions to hospitality. Both men embody the profound impact that dedication and passion can have on their communities, significantly enhancing Fiji’s reputation on the global stage. Their inspiring narratives offer hope that a heartfelt commitment can cultivate future leaders in tourism and aviation, promoting a rich cultural environment for visitors to Fiji.
