Team Fiji is making strides in its preparations for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, but first, it needs to secure $3.5 million to finance the participation of its athletes. Team Fiji aims to compete in 12 of the 14 sporting events, which include archery, athletics, baseball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, indoor women’s volleyball, para-athletics, para-table tennis, triathlon, swimming, va’a, and weightlifting.

Chef de Mission Josaia Tuinamata has shared that national federations are currently in the final stages of team selection, particularly after the tournaments that took place during the Easter weekend. Importantly, the fundraising effort is focused on covering the $3,000 FJD levy per athlete, and the team has initiated a lottery to help reach its financial goal. “We are asking family members and federations to assist athletes in selling lottery books priced at $2 each, with each book containing 15 tickets,” Tuinamata explained. The lottery ticket sales are meant to supplement the funds from national federations that are already contributing.

The lottery will close on June 2nd, with the draw set for June 13th. Team Fiji has also arranged chartered flights to Palau, making the success of the lottery crucial for covering travel expenses. The Pacific Mini Games are scheduled to occur from June 29 to July 9, 2025, and they represent a significant opportunity for Fiji’s athletes to showcase their talents on an international stage.

The collective efforts from various sporting federations, including Basketball Fiji and Fiji Swimming, reflect a strong commitment to preparing for the Mini Games. For instance, Basketball Fiji is on track to finalize its squad with heightened competition in trials, showcasing athletes’ growth and community support. Similarly, swimming trials have demonstrated a promising commitment among participants, with athletes working diligently to meet qualifying times.

This spirit of ambition across all sports not only embodies Team Fiji’s preparation but also signals a hopeful outlook for the nation’s representation in regional sports. With community involvement and robust training regimens, these athletes are poised to make a significant impact in Palau, enhancing Fiji’s recognition in the world of sports.
