Junior Boys 400 metre champion Wilisoni Fifita made history by securing Church College of Fiji’s first gold medal at this year’s Coca-Cola Games, a moment that filled the 14-year-old from Namuka-i-Lau with pride and emotion. After crossing the finish line, Fifita expressed that the sacrifices made during training were indeed worthwhile.

“This gold means a lot to me and to my school, which has supported me throughout the year. This victory is for them,” Fifita stated, highlighting the importance of community and support in achieving personal goals. He focused intensely on his competition, particularly on Brooklyn Bennett from Marist Brothers High School, who was considered the favorite to win. “I wanted to prove everyone wrong and show that I could outperform him,” he shared regarding his mindset during the race.

Fifita’s achievement stands as a testament to determination and focus, serving as inspiration for other young athletes in Fiji. Similar stories have emerged during the Coca-Cola Games, where athletes like Waisiki Komainaiqoro from YAT Sen Secondary School are also striving for gold medals, displaying the spirit of resilience and ambition prevalent among Fijian youth.

This collective pursuit of excellence in sports not only enhances school pride but fosters a nurturing environment where young athletes can thrive. As Fifita reflects on his memorable gold medal run, it is clear that his success is intertwined with the larger narrative of aspiration and support within Fiji’s athletic community.
