The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has recorded 2,304 applications in the first three days of its phase one recruitment drive for election officials, an early sign of public interest as the office steps up staffing ahead of upcoming electoral activities. The recruitment opened on Monday, April 13, and will run until May 9, with the FEO aiming to attract at least 18,000 applicants by the end of this phase, Acting Deputy Supervisor of Elections Anaseini Senimoli said.

Applications are being accepted at four recruitment centres — Suva, Nausori, Labasa and Lautoka — and Ms Senimoli reported a strong early turnout of both new and returning applicants. “From the three days we have been open, we have received 2,304 applications. We are hoping that by the end of phase one, we will reach at least 18,000 applications. That is our target,” she told reporters, stressing the numbers indicate community willingness to support the electoral process.

The recruitment drive is focused on filling the wide range of roles required during polling operations, pre-polling activities and mandatory training sessions. The FEO has set out specific eligibility requirements for prospective election officials: applicants must be registered voters, politically neutral and possess basic literacy and numeracy skills. Ms Senimoli emphasised those criteria reflect the practical duties election officials perform, such as counting ballot papers and verifying voter names on electoral rolls. “These requirements are essential due to the responsibilities election officials carry during polling operations,” she said.

Availability during key electoral periods is another critical factor in the selection process. Applicants must be prepared to attend mandatory training and be available for pre-polling duties and election day work depending on operational needs, Ms Senimoli said, noting that ensuring full coverage across all polling venues is a priority. The FEO is asking applicants to carefully review the requirements before attending recruitment centres to avoid delays in the registration process.

The early application figures come as the elections office continues broader efforts to bolster public engagement and the integrity of electoral processes. While recruitment targets remain ambitious — the 18,000-application goal will require sustained interest over the coming weeks — the strong opening days provide an initial boost for organisers tasked with staffing what are often logistically complex polling operations across the country.

FEO officials will continue to accept applications through May 9 at the four centres and are expected to begin processing and training shortlisted applicants in the weeks that follow. The agency’s push to secure a large pool of trained, neutral officials aims to ensure smooth administration and credible outcomes at the next series of electoral events.
