Fijian Drua: From Rookies to Financial Independence

Fijian Drua Players Drive Towards Financial Independence

Fijian Drua players are seeing noteworthy advancements in their personal lives, transitioning from relying on public transportation to owning their own vehicles, thanks to the financial literacy initiatives led by Gaylene Osborne. As the coordinator for the players’ personal development program, in partnership with the Pacific Rugby Players Association, Osborne has been crucial in steering these athletes towards financial independence and thoughtful long-term planning.

Many players have voiced their appreciation for Osborne’s support as they broaden their horizons beyond rugby. Under her mentorship, several athletes have made significant strides by starting their own businesses, acquiring properties, or making prudent investments. Fullback Vuate Karawalevu highlighted the value of saving and seeking advice from credible sources like Osborne. Hooker Mesulame Dolokoto emphasized the importance of imparting financial literacy to younger members of the squad, especially with the existence of a development team within the Drua.

Osborne remarked on the visible improvements in players’ financial situations, stating, “Most of our players now have properties and cars. Some have started their own businesses.” Noteworthy is the success of two players who have launched a coffee caravan near their headquarters in Nadi, showcasing the tangible outcomes of the personal development program.

The education provided in financial health includes vital skills such as budgeting and saving. As players embrace these practices, they begin evaluating large purchases, signaling a promising move toward financial stability. Osborne also encourages the establishment of operational accounts and savings for future projects, including supporting family members.

As the Drua prepares for their match against the Brumbies on Friday in Canberra, their dedication to financial literacy and personal growth is not only indicative of individual achievements but also represents a broader initiative to empower athletes and strengthen their community. This approach underscores the vital role of education in sports, particularly in securing a sustainable future for players post-rugby.

The progress in financial literacy among the team reflects a deliberate effort to cultivate a better future for Fijian rugby and its athletes, fostering a generation that values both their athletic endeavors and responsible management of personal wealth, ultimately leading to community development.
