Police have confirmed that a yacht recently wrecked and washed ashore at Vunikodi Village, near Udu Point, is registered in Papeete, French Polynesia. According to records obtained from French Polynesian authorities, the vessel reportedly sank on May 26, 2025, in the waters near Moorea Island.

In response to the incident, the Fiji Police Force, along with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Republic of Fiji Navy, has collaborated with regional law enforcement partners to trace the yacht’s origin and its journey. Information gathered indicates that the yacht’s owner had made multiple efforts to relocate the vessel following its sinking, including chartering an aircraft to assess its condition while it was still overturned at sea.

Initial evaluations conducted by police and maritime experts revealed that the yacht had been adrift in the ocean for an extended period, showing significant damage to its interior components. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the yacht’s journey and how it ultimately arrived in Fijian waters are currently ongoing.

This incident highlights the complexities of maritime incidents and the importance of international cooperation in addressing marine issues. As authorities continue their investigations, there is hope that they can piece together what led to the yacht’s unfortunate situation.
