Fiji Weightlifting Shines with Major Awards: What’s Next?

Weightlifting Fiji recently celebrated a remarkable achievement by securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the athletes’ performances, particularly their impressive medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the athletes, thanking both them and the governmental support that has made their accomplishments possible. However, he also noted that funding continues to be a challenge for the federation, emphasizing the need for financial resources to ensure competitive readiness. “To compete at the highest level, we require financial support to provide the athletes with optimal training conditions, including advanced facilities and high-tech equipment,” he stated.

Moreover, Elder highlighted the necessity for enhanced medical support systems and outreach initiatives to discover and develop talent across various provinces. The Fiji National Sports Commission has played a vital role by facilitating outreach programs that help in recruiting new athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, stating that preparations have already commenced and discussions are underway to identify potential medal contenders. He emphasized the importance of growing participation in the sport and improving financial backing to achieve these goals.

In recognition of excellence, Taniela Rainibogi received the FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year award, while Miriama Taletawa was honored as the Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder earned the title of Young Male Athlete of the Year.

This success not only highlights the potential of Fiji’s weightlifting athletes but also reflects opportunities for further growth and development within the sport, driven by community support and increased funding.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji’s achievements at the FSC awards mark an exciting chapter for the sport, fueled by the dedication of its athletes and support from the community, setting a positive trajectory toward future competitions.
