The Government is taking proactive measures to enhance maritime security by considering the establishment of a new naval base on a maritime island. This initiative is part of a larger national security strategy aimed at countering drug trafficking and improving sea law enforcement efforts.
Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, confirmed that discussions regarding the naval base have already taken place. He highlighted that Lau has been identified as a potential location for this strategic initiative. According to Naivalurua, the establishment of a forward police presence is crucial, whether that be in Savusavu or on the western side of the country.
A document outlining these plans has been released, falling under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence. It articulates the necessary recommendations for developing the forward components of the nation’s maritime capabilities. The Minister emphasized that the role of the navy would primarily be to assist police operations in intercepting drugs at sea, while the police will lead enforcement actions.
Naivalurua urged the importance of collaboration, stating, “First things first, get everybody together, understanding what needs to be done, and let’s fight it together.” This cooperative approach aligns with Fiji’s overarching strategic goals to combat drug trafficking through coordinated operations at sea and within local communities. The aim is to bolster rapid response capabilities and enhance law enforcement across critical maritime areas.
This plan not only represents a significant step in addressing drug-related issues but also demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s waters for future generations.
