FIJI Water Launches Vanua Levu Fruit Farming Pilot as Seedlings Arrive

The Wonderful Company, the parent organization of FIJI Water, has made a significant advancement in its agricultural initiatives with the arrival of the first batch of seedlings in Waiqele, located on the island of Vanua Levu. This ambitious pilot project aims to cultivate a variety of fruits, including Persian limes, Mexican limes, lemons, and papayas, signaling the company’s commitment to investing in Fiji’s agriculture sector.

Over 7,000 seedlings have been dispatched from California, with more than half already reaching their destination. These seedlings will be raised in a newly constructed greenhouse facility in Waiqele, which has been developed with the assistance of an international greenhouse engineer, ensuring optimal growing conditions.

FIJI Water has undertaken this initiative after conducting two years of research that highlighted the significant potential of Vanua Levu for producing high-quality citrus and tropical fruits. To manage operations, a Farm Manager from Vanua Levu has been appointed to work closely with the National Agriculture Pte Ltd team, emphasizing sustainable farming practices and fostering cooperation with local communities and authorities.

The Wonderful Company brings a wealth of experience from its global operations in citrus, almonds, pistachios, and pomegranates, and aims to transfer that knowledge to local farmers through continuous training programs. Earlier this year, workshops led by beekeeping specialists were conducted in Nadi and Labasa, with plans for similar programs as the project expands.

The broader vision is to lessen Fiji’s dependency on imported fruit, enhance food security, and create new economic opportunities for farmers in Vanua Levu. The project is anticipated to bring multiple benefits to local communities, including job creation, skill development, and increased access to fresh, locally grown produce, ultimately contributing to the region’s prosperity.
