On June 3, the Lautoka Scouters Council, in partnership with the Messengers of Peace (MOP) Lautoka team and the Lautoka City Council, marked World Environment Day and World Oceans Day with a successful clean-up campaign. The event took place on Saturday and saw a strong turnout from local community members dedicated to environmental conservation.
Bimal Deo, the Messengers of Peace District Coordinator, praised all participants for their commitment. He emphasized the significance of collective action in preserving the planet, stating, “Every action counts. Let’s restore, protect, and preserve together. Together, we continue to be Messengers of Peace and guardians of our planet.”
The initiative not only aimed to clean the local environment but also educated participants on the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy ecosystem. Each participant received a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging their efforts and commitment to environmental stewardship.
This clean-up aligns with similar efforts nationwide, reflecting a growing movement in Fiji aimed at tackling environmental challenges. For instance, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change recently launched clean-up campaigns across various locations, engaging community members and promoting awareness about the urgent need to address litter, especially plastic pollution, in marine environments. Previous campaigns across Fiji have successfully highlighted the dual role of such initiatives in reducing waste and fostering a sense of community responsibility.
As more organizations and individuals unite for the common goal of environmental preservation, there is hope for a cleaner, more sustainable future for Fiji’s natural landscapes. Collective efforts like these not only contribute to immediate clean-up outcomes but also instill lifelong values of environmental stewardship among participants, particularly the youth, ensuring a healthier planet for generations to come.
