The Fijian government is taking steps to address the increasing congestion on the nation’s roads by reviewing its transport policies, which may include potential restrictions on vehicle imports and age limits for vehicles. Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has announced that a comprehensive policy paper has been commissioned to re-evaluate how vehicles are registered and operate in the country.
Ro Filipe emphasized the need for an updated understanding of the optimal number of vehicles, the types that should be allowed, and their age. This review signals a proactive approach to tackle the public’s concerns about rising traffic volumes, especially in urban areas, where infrastructure is under significant strain.
The Minister indicated that he had tasked the Director of Transport with expediting the preparation of this policy paper. It is expected that the review will lead to further discussions and consultations once the report is completed. “There will also be consultations with stakeholders, and that is something that we will progress in the next two to four weeks,” Ro Filipe stated.
The upcoming review aims not only to make the transport system in Fiji more sustainable but also to ensure that it balances accessibility, safety, and economic demands in light of the growing vehicle ownership across the islands. As the government moves forward with these plans, there is hope that positive changes will lead to improved traffic management and better travel experiences for residents and visitors alike.
