The Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has emphasized that ensuring safety at sea is of paramount importance, particularly during the busy festive and holiday season. With a noticeable increase in inter-island travel and maritime activities at this time, there is a heightened risk of unsafe practices if regulations are not adhered to.
Recognizing these challenges, Minister Ro Filipe has instructed the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) to intensify their enforcement and monitoring efforts to ensure that all maritime safety standards are strictly observed throughout this peak travel period. He has called on vessel operators to fully comply with safety protocols, which include respecting approved passenger limits at all times.
In addition to these measures, the Minister has urged the public to take personal responsibility while traveling to maritime islands. It is essential for travelers not to pressure vessel operators or MSAF officers to exceed capacity limits once vessels are full.
As the festive season approaches, Minister Ro Filipe is encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly and prioritize safety during their travels. This proactive approach aims to enhance the safety of all maritime activities and ensures a more enjoyable holiday experience for everyone involved.
