The World Health Organization (WHO) has committed to assisting the Ministry of Health in reviewing the Mental Health Act of 2010, as announced by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu during a parliamentary session. This initiative aligns with the Ministry’s broader efforts to modernize outdated health legislation. Dr. Lalabalavu responded to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s address at the opening of the 2025 parliamentary session, emphasizing that internal discussions regarding the review process have already commenced.
In collaboration with the WHO, the Ministry plans to engage an external consultant who specializes in global mental health legislation reviews. This expert will work in tandem with the Ministry and the Office of the Solicitor General to facilitate the review process, which is expected to be finalized within this year.
