The Ministry of Communications in Fiji is set to establish a 24/7 government security operations center this year as part of an initiative to strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity framework. This announcement was made by Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali during a national consultation on cybersecurity strategy, highlighting the urgent need to combat the increasing cyber threats faced by the country.
The new facility is designed to act as a central hub for real-time threat monitoring and coordination of cyber threat intelligence among various government agencies. “The Cabinet approved this initiative, and I’m pleased to note that the Ministry of Finance sees its value, which means we can begin implementation this year,” Ali said.
Fiji has seen a notable increase in cyber threats, and the Ministry is collaborating with the ICT department and national data center to better understand the landscape of these threats. Ali has encouraged other relevant agencies to engage in these consultations actively to ensure the comprehensive and effective rollout of the city’s cybersecurity strategy.
This development aligns with ongoing efforts by the Fijian government to enhance national cybersecurity measures, such as the formation of its National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and collaboration with international partners, particularly Australia, to bolster necessary frameworks and responses.
These initiatives are part of a broader commitment by the Fijian government to secure its digital infrastructure, not only ensuring the safety of its citizens but also contributing to regional stability in cyberspace. As Fijian authorities work to develop a resilient cybersecurity environment, the positive momentum reflects a hopeful outlook for safeguarding the nation’s digital future.
Fiji is actively positioning itself as a leader in cybersecurity in the Pacific region, demonstrating a proactive stance toward building a safer, interconnected digital space for all nations in the area. The establishment of the security operations center is a crucial step in this endeavor, suggesting good things on the horizon for national and regional security against digital threats.
