The Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd has announced the appointment of Adrian Sunil Parshu Ram as a new Director on its Board, effective from April 1, 2025. This decision comes in the wake of the departure of Athil Narayan, who served on the Board for seven years. Chairman Nitya Reddy praised Narayan for his significant contributions to the industry, particularly in advocating for climate sustainability, sustainable aviation fuel, and ethanol initiatives.
Parshu Ram, a lawyer and managing partner of the Labasa-based firm Gibson & Company, brings extensive legal and business acumen to the role. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland, an MBA from the University of the South Pacific, and is a member of the Fiji Institute of Accountants. His diverse expertise spans insurance, commercial law, labor and employment law, taxation, and finance, positioning him as a valuable asset for the FSC Board.
Reddy pointed out the pressing challenges facing Fiji’s sugar industry, including financial difficulties, declining cane production, deteriorating milling infrastructure, and rising operational costs. The current landscape necessitates directors who can adeptly navigate these challenges and implement necessary reforms. Ram’s experience in litigation, mediation, and business management is expected to be instrumental in steering the FSC through these tough times.
In recent discussions, there has been a renewed optimism regarding the industry, with the FSC actively engaging with international partners and emphasizing sustainability. Ram’s appointment is seen as part of strategic moves aimed at revitalizing the sector and enhancing support for local farmers, with a focus on sustainable practices and overall economic benefits.
The hope is that under Ram’s guidance, along with the corporation’s ongoing commitment to strategic governance, Fiji’s sugar industry will navigate its current challenges successfully, leading to a more resilient and vibrant future.
