Gilbert Vakalalabure, the Chief Executive of the Fiji Sports Council, will not face suspension but will take annual leave starting next week, as confirmed by Acting Board Chair Peter Mazey following an emergency board meeting. The discussion did not involve a decision on Vakalalabure’s potential suspension, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into various concerns that have emerged in recent weeks.
The Fiji Sports Council board is currently in the process of appointing an external investigator to delve deep into the issues raised, spurred by stakeholder feedback and social media discussions. Mazey highlighted that comprehensive terms of reference for the investigation were developed after extensive consultations, indicating a broadened scope influenced by many matters brought to light.
Mazey emphasized the significance of ensuring the investigation remains independent and devoid of conflicts of interest, particularly in a context where personal and professional relationships are often intertwined. To mitigate any potential bias, the board is evaluating two firms to conduct the investigation: one based in Australia but with local offices, and another local entity.
In terms of financial implications, Mazey assured that the investigation’s costs would significantly lower than a Commission of Inquiry, with an estimated budget of under $50,000. He expressed optimism that the investigator could be appointed within the next 24 to 48 hours, leading to the public release of the full terms of reference.
The acting chair also noted that the board has adapted to conduct meetings virtually to facilitate participation, particularly as its chairman could not attend due to flooding in Lautoka but was able to contribute online. All concerns raised, including those regarding human resources, operations, and coaching staff, will be incorporated into the upcoming investigation.
The proactive measures being put in place signify the board’s commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within the organization, working towards a resolution that honors the interests of all stakeholders involved. The investigation not only aims to address specific issues but also to restore trust amongst the supporters and the broader sporting community in Fiji.
