The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has officially launched a strategic partnership with AIA Sports, a move that is poised to propel the union towards achieving its goal of Tier 1 status. FRU board chair John Sanday emphasized a renewed focus on enhancing the domestic rugby landscape, highlighting this alliance as a pivotal element in Fiji’s ongoing rugby development.
In a significant introduction, Sanday welcomed Thomas Lièvremont, the Sports Director at AIA Sports and a former French international rugby player, who will oversee the collaboration with Fiji Rugby. FRU chief executive Koli Sewabu heralded the partnership as a historic moment, suggesting it surpasses the scope of a conventional supplier or technical collaboration.
One of the key innovations stemming from this partnership is the introduction of a centralized digital rugby management system tailored for Fiji. This system aims to effectively link grassroots clubs, provincial unions, and national teams onto a single professional platform. According to Sewabu, the application will modernize operations, streamlining player registration, medical records, training loads, and performance data, replacing outdated manual processes.
Sewabu stated, “The system will allow our coaches from national to eighth grade to track development pathways like never before. We can identify talent earlier, nurture it smarter, and manage careers with a long-term vision.” The newly established database will also enable the FRU to regulate indemnity fees on both national and international levels, aimed at promoting the sustainable growth of local clubs.
As the partnership unfolds, it represents a strategic pivot towards Tier 1 rugby standards, reinforcing the importance of robust off-field infrastructures to complement Fiji’s on-field prowess. With the infusion of world-class analytical technology and expertise brought in by AIA Sports, the collaboration is expected to lay the foundation for a professional rugby framework that will benefit future generations of players in Fiji.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the quality of rugby in Fiji but also seeks to identify and nurture talent while ensuring that the sport develops sustainably at all levels.
