The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby season will begin a week later than planned to allow the establishment of a new interim committee focused on revamping the governance and management of schools rugby. This decision was made after extensive consultation between the Ministry of Education, the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU), and the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd (FRFU).

The interim committee, which will consist of representatives from each of these organizations along with an independent administrator selected by the national rugby body, is tasked with reviewing governance issues and operational procedures. Its aim is to ensure that school rugby competitions align with the policies of the FRFU and adhere to global standards set by World Rugby.

Acting CEO Koli Sewabu noted that the delay was necessary to properly address administrative and logistical details under the new framework. He emphasized the importance of providing a clear, structured environment for student-athletes, highlighting that their welfare is a priority. Stakeholders have welcomed this initiative, viewing it as a significant step towards improving accountability and organization within Fiji schools rugby.

This initiative coincides with broader governance reforms taking place within Fiji’s rugby landscape, reflecting a commitment to enhancing both transparency and collaboration among stakeholders. As the new season is set to commence next week, pending the operational readiness of the interim committee, there is optimism about the future of school rugby in Fiji. Collectively, these changes aim to create a more unified and robust framework for young athletes to thrive in the sport they love.
