A critical staff and resource shortage is impacting health services in the northern regions of Fiji. Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa recently confirmed this situation following his visit to health facilities including the Dreketi and Lekutu health centres and Nabouwalu Hospital. The minister aimed to gain insight into the challenges faced by frontline health workers.

During the visit, frontline staff expressed their concerns regarding insufficient human resources, a lack of medicines and essential supplies, limited transportation options, inadequate staff accommodation, and the overall quality of service delivery. Mr. Ravunawa emphasized that addressing these issues is fundamental, stating that planning for health centres is an urgent requirement.

Despite these challenges, the minister reassured staff of the government’s commitment to enhancing primary healthcare, ensuring that all Fijians have access to quality services. He expressed his deep gratitude for the dedication and hard work of health personnel, acknowledging that their efforts are vital to saving lives and bolstering the healthcare system.

These visits are part of the government’s broader initiative to address deficiencies in the healthcare sector, especially in remote areas. By focusing on staffing and resource needs, the government aims to build a more resilient health system, highlighting that collective efforts are essential in overcoming current challenges.
