The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has confirmed that the nation remains free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu. However, in light of the virus’s ongoing global spread, the Authority is urging the public to maintain vigilance.

BAF has implemented rigorous border surveillance measures, as the primary risks are associated with migratory birds and illegal imports. To mitigate the threat of infection, BAF advises poultry farmers to keep their chickens in secured fenced or netted areas and to limit their contact with wild waterfowl, such as ducks and other birds.

Additionally, the Authority is encouraging the public to report any unusual incidents of bird deaths. This proactive step is critical to safeguarding Fiji’s poultry industry and protecting the country’s wildlife from potential outbreaks. By remaining alert and informed, citizens can contribute significantly to the prevention of bird flu in the region.
