Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, recently announced the introduction of drug testing in future local rugby tournaments, underscoring the commitment to clean sports in Fiji. This announcement came during the closing ceremony of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroot Vatulele 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park, which took place over two days.

Emphasizing the importance of integrity in sports, Saukuru stated, “We will have drug testing in local tournaments in the future. We will have officials on site because drugs do not have a place in sports. You will represent Fiji one day. I’m encouraging you not to take drugs.” This proactive measure is aimed at fostering a culture of fairness and sportsmanship among players.

The tournament culminated with the Police team triumphing in the women’s division, defeating the Lilian Amazon in the finals. In the men’s competition, the Fiji 7s Development side emerged victorious, overcoming the Ravuka Sharks with a score of 17-7.

During his address, Saukuru expressed his gratitude to all participants and highlighted the ongoing support from the government towards sports development in Fiji. He remarked, “I want to acknowledge all players, officials, and management who participated in the two-day Fiji Sports Council Grassroot Vatulele 7s tournament. We thank the government for their support towards sports. Sports have put Fiji’s name out there.”

The minister’s announcement signifies a meaningful move towards encouraging ethical practices within grassroots rugby, establishing a foundation for future athletes to compete fairly and honorably. This initiative not only aims to enhance the integrity of local tournaments but also promotes a healthier sporting environment for all.
