Fiji Prepares for Weather Fury: Are You Ready?

Fiji is bracing for severe weather as a tropical disturbance is predicted to impact the country starting Sunday. The disturbance is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the likelihood of flooding, prompting officials to call for residents to prepare adequately.

During a recent press conference, Salaseini Daunabuna, the acting permanent secretary for Disaster Risk Management, emphasized the collective responsibility of Fijians to ensure their safety and that of their communities. She stated that preparedness is essential in such critical times.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a strong wind warning, particularly for the Northern Division and northeastern parts of Viti Levu, including the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. A heavy rain alert is also active for the entire Northern Division and Yasawa Group.

Daunabuna noted that a low-pressure system located to the northwest of Fiji is expected to intensify as it moves southeast toward Fiji waters by Sunday. She cautioned about potential disruptions in traffic which could lead to road closures, advising motorists to avoid crossing flooded areas.

To prepare for the expected conditions, Daunabuna urged households to stock essential items such as food, water, emergency power sources, and medications to last several days, as disruptions to services may occur due to flooding. She also highlighted the forecast of strong winds and the potential for landslides, calling on the public to stay informed about the weather through official channels.

Emergency services, including the Fiji Police Force, are on standby to assist in evacuations if necessary. The National Disaster Management Office has outlined various safety measures recommending that individuals avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas, and that community leaders work alongside the government to ensure overall safety.

This situation serves as a reminder of the resilience of Fijians when faced with natural threats. Communities can come together, showcasing solidarity and support for each other during these challenging times. Engaging in responsive actions and staying prepared will undoubtedly help mitigate the impacts of the anticipated severe weather event.
