The Fiji Police Force has received a substantial operational uplift with the official handover of new equipment from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), aimed at providing critical support for the ongoing FPF Uplift reform initiative. The event took place at the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova, led by AFP Assistant Commissioner for the Pacific, Nigel Ryan.

On behalf of the Fiji Police, Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu received the equipment in the presence of dignitaries including Australian Assistant Minister for Pacific Islands Affairs, Senator Nita Green, the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, H.E. Peter Roberts, and Ministry of Policing Permanent Secretary, Mr. Berenado Daveta.

During the ceremony, Assistant Commissioner Ryan highlighted the strong partnership between the AFP and Fiji Police, particularly in combating transnational crime through collaborative efforts, intelligence sharing, and capacity building initiatives. He emphasized the significance of the recently signed Solesolevaki Partnership and Police Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding, marking a new phase in regional cooperation.

Ryan commended Fiji’s proactive leadership in regional policing, referencing the recent engagement of the Fijian Prime Minister with the AFP’s Pinkenba Hub and Fiji’s crucial role in shaping the broader Pacific Policing Initiative. The Fiji Police’s involvement in the Pacific Police Support Group, including their deployment during the Pacific Mini Games, showcases newfound capabilities and readiness to address regional security challenges.

Commissioner Tudravu expressed his sincere gratitude for this support from Australia, noting that the new equipment, which includes vehicles and specialized crime unit gear, symbolizes a commitment to modernize policing services in Fiji and rebuild public trust. He acknowledged the swift progress from discussions to actual delivery of the resources and praised the dedication of the AFP team.

This development aligns with earlier initiatives focused on enhancing Fiji’s law enforcement through training and modernization, such as the establishment of the Regional Centre of Excellence for operational field forensics. Both the recent and historical support reflect a steadfast commitment to regional stability and safety, aiming for a brighter future for public safety in Fiji and beyond.

This boost in resources and cooperation illustrates a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s police capabilities, reinforcing their ability to effectively manage security challenges and fostering greater community trust. The ongoing commitment from Australia exemplifies how international partnerships can cultivate not just enhanced security measures, but also strengthen the regional bonds within the Pacific community.
