The Fiji Police Force has heightened security measures on Lakeba Island in anticipation of the traditional installation of the Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni Vanua o Lau. Special units have been deployed to ensure the safety and security of dignitaries, officials, and visitors attending the ceremony.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe indicated that prior to the operation, police successfully collaborated with traditional leaders and other stakeholders to create a coordinated strategy for facilitating movement on the island. Mr. Vusonilawe expressed that the operations are being executed in phases, from preparation to ensuring the safe return of all visitors.

In a related incident, a man was apprehended at the Lakeba jetty for allegedly possessing illicit drugs during a routine check. Officers from the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, Police Mobile Force, and Central Division conducted this operation, highlighting the heightened police presence aimed at maintaining community safety during the busy event. The seized substance, a clear plastic bag containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana, was discovered thanks to the efforts of a K9 officer.

This proactive law enforcement approach reinforces the ongoing commitment of the Fiji Police to address drug-related activities, especially in light of recent incidents across the country. Similar operations in maritime locations have seen increased police activity aimed at deter drug trafficking in the region, reflecting broader initiatives to ensure public safety and combat substance abuse.

The collaboration between law enforcement and community leaders underscores a hopeful outlook as authorities aim to foster a healthier, safer environment. Engaging the community in these endeavors is vital, promoting awareness of the dangers posed by drug use while paving the way for a united front against illicit activities. Such comprehensive strategies may contribute positively to the community’s overall wellbeing and security.
