Fiji Police Academy Overhauls Community Policing Curriculum for a Safer Tomorrow

Fiji Police Academy Revamps Community Policing Training for a Safer Future

Work has begun on a comprehensive review of the Fiji Police Academy’s School of Community Policing Curriculum, a key development in the ongoing transformation of the Fiji Police Force (FPF). This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the Fiji Police Force Training and Development Framework, aiming to improve the quality, consistency, reliability, and reputation of police training.

The project was initiated during a consultation forum at Nakasi Police Station, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Administration (ACP/A) Meli Sateki. The session saw involvement from senior and front-line community policing officers, retired officers, as well as Dr. Eci Nabalarua, the creator of the Duavata Community Policing model, alongside advisors from the New Zealand Police through the Fiji Police Partnership Programme (FPPP).

This curriculum review plays a vital role in ensuring that training is closely aligned with the distinct responsibilities of community policing personnel, including Divisional Managers, Post officers, and Cluster Chiefs. ACP Sateki underscored the need to tackle challenges in policing, particularly those related to training and succession planning. He pointed out the need for a significant shift in how community police officers are trained, focusing on preparing them for their roles rather than just reflecting their titles.

During the consultation, ACP Sateki encouraged open discussions, valuing the diverse perspectives of the participants. He expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of this review process, which he believes will equip police officers for future internal promotions and improve their marketability, ultimately enabling them to serve Fiji effectively in various roles.

The forum is set to conclude on Friday, possibly leading to transformative changes that could significantly bolster the practice of community policing in Fiji.

This initiative ties into a broader framework discussed in a previous ‘Police Reset’ document, focusing on modernizing the Fiji Police Force’s structure to enhance operational efficiency, accountability, and community trust. The current emphasis on structured leadership development and increased community engagement offers a promising outlook for the future of policing in Fiji, envisioning enhanced safety and greater public confidence in law enforcement.
