The Minister for Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, has addressed concerns regarding the recent increase in electricity tariffs, emphasizing the responsibility of elected officials to advocate for the needs of ordinary Fijians while also respecting the autonomy of regulatory bodies. Her comments come in response to growing apprehension over the rising cost of living, particularly in relation to electricity bills, which impact households and businesses alike.

Bainivalu recognized the essential role played by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, highlighting the importance of independent institutions in upholding democratic values. However, she firmly stated that ministers, being elected representatives, have an obligation to raise issues that affect their constituents directly, especially in light of Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau’s recent expressions of concern over the tariff hike.

She pointed out that electricity is a fundamental necessity for citizens, and increases in power costs can significantly influence prices for food, small businesses, farmers, and families trying to manage their budgets. The Minister called for increased public consultation before implementing decisions that would have widespread repercussions, noting that while changes may be based on technical assessments, it is ultimately the people who must bear the consequences.

To foster public trust and ensure equitable decision-making, Bainivalu stressed the need for transparency and fairness in the process. She reaffirmed the government’s duty to listen to the voices of the people and respond to their concerns, particularly when financial policies exacerbate existing stresses on their livelihoods.

The Minister concluded by reinforcing the concept that government is fundamentally established to serve the public, asserting that the welfare of citizens should always remain at the forefront of national policymaking. Her commitment to advocacy highlights a hopeful path towards a more responsive and engaged governance that prioritizes the needs of all Fijians.
