Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs, the president of the Suva Netball Association, has voiced concerns regarding Netball Fiji’s inadequate support for its affiliated associations. This statement comes after 15 netball association presidents across Fiji signed a letter proposing a motion of no confidence in the executive committee of Netball Fiji. Vosararawa-Sachs indicated that while a few associations chose not to join the motion, those that did are unified in their belief that Netball Fiji has failed to adequately serve their needs, particularly in terms of development and support.
“It is concerning that major associations from the west of Fiji, including Lautoka and Nadi, have expressed that the leadership at Netball Fiji has not prioritized their interests,” she remarked. During the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), Vosararawa-Sachs felt there was a significant lack of transparency, a sentiment echoed by many leaders who attended.
In a broader context, this criticism reflects ongoing debates within Netball Fiji regarding governance and accountability. The issues raised also connect to previous discussions where leaders from various associations have voiced their dissatisfaction with the current executive committee, citing concerns such as nepotism, the performance of the national team, and the overall management practices of Netball Fiji.
In response to these matters, Netball Fiji has assured members of its commitment to fair governance and its dedication to addressing the concerns raised during the discussions. They have stated that they will uphold transparency and ensure that all processes surrounding the upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM) are conducted fairly.
Despite these challenges, there remains a hopeful outlook among stakeholders for revitalization within the sport. Efforts to enhance local competitions, improve player pathways, and engage grassroots development could lead to significant improvements. As the netball community in Fiji seeks reform, leaders continue to advocate for changes that can uplift the sport, encourage more robust participation, and ultimately foster a stronger netball culture in the region.
This moment could serve as an essential juncture for netball in Fiji, with the potential for positive change on the horizon if the leadership listens to the voices within the community and takes action toward reform.
