Fiji is advancing its initiative to establish a modern national hospital, according to Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. This progress comes in light of the recent identification of the Valelevu Grounds as a potential site for the new facility, following Cabinet-endorsed criteria. Currently, technical and feasibility assessments are being conducted to evaluate the site’s suitability.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the initiative extends beyond merely constructing a new hospital. It also encompasses significant upgrades to existing healthcare facilities, particularly the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, which has been earmarked for essential improvements as plans for the long-term development continue.

The Health Minister highlighted collaboration with donor partners as a critical component of this initiative. The proposed development forms part of the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project, backed by significant funding from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the OPEC Fund.

In addition, Dr. Lalabalavu acknowledged the vital support from the Australian Government, which is providing substantial grants to facilitate immediate upgrades at CWM Hospital. This support is crucial in ensuring the continuity of healthcare services while Fiji moves towards building a state-of-the-art national hospital.

This approach signals a shift from temporary solutions to a focus on sustainable investment, aiming to enhance and fortify the healthcare system for future generations. By prioritizing these long-term developments, Fiji is taking meaningful steps toward building a more resilient and effective healthcare landscape.
