The late Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, was honored at a State funeral at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, attended by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials. In his eulogy, Mr. Rabuka praised Rayalu as a “humble yet visionary leader” who made significant contributions to Fiji’s agricultural sector during his public service career.
Rayalu, 57, passed away on June 12 after a brief illness. Prior to his political career, he served for decades as a civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture, ultimately rising to the role of chief economist and deputy secretary. He was elected to Parliament under the People’s Alliance party in December 2022, and subsequently appointed as Minister for Agriculture and Waterways.
The mourning ceremonies, known as reguregu, began on June 18 and culminated in his funeral service, which took place on June 20, 2025. His burial followed at the Old Suva Cemetery. Rayalu’s legacy is one of commitment and compassion, not only seen in his professional achievements but also through his deep connections with farmers and rural communities across Fiji.
Tributes highlighted his proactive approach to improving access to agricultural resources for vulnerable populations. Local leaders and community members expressed their grief, emphasizing Rayalu’s dedication and support in helping them advance agricultural practices and technology.
As the nation mourns his loss, there is a collective hope that future leaders will draw inspiration from Rayalu’s example of selfless service and dedication to nurturing Fiji’s agricultural landscape for the benefit of all Fijians. His contributions serve as a potent reminder of the positive impact that dedicated leadership can have on communities.
