Dr Alipate Vakamocea has resigned as president of the Fiji Medical Association (FMA), the organisation announced on Tuesday, citing personal commitments. The move triggers an immediate leadership change with Dr Ronal Kumar appointed Acting President to steer the association until its next scheduled elections in August 2026.
In an official statement, the FMA thanked Dr Vakamocea for his service and leadership, saying he had worked to advance the organisation’s mission and support the medical profession in Fiji. “Dr Vakamocea has provided dedicated service during his tenure, and we extend our sincere gratitude for his efforts,” the association said, without providing further detail on the personal commitments that prompted his departure.
Dr Ronal Kumar assumes the presidency with immediate effect. The FMA expressed confidence in Dr Kumar’s capacity to manage the association through the transition period, emphasising continuity of its core work on professional standards, advocacy and member support. “The Association remains committed to serving its members and the people of Fiji, and looks forward to continued collaboration and engagement under Dr Kumar’s stewardship,” the statement said.
The appointment of an acting president ahead of the August 2026 elections is intended to ensure the FMA maintains an active leadership presence while preparations for the ballot proceed. The association plays a central role in representing doctors’ professional interests, advising on clinical standards and engaging with government and health sector stakeholders — functions that the FMA said will continue uninterrupted during the interim leadership.
The FMA did not announce any changes to its executive committee or timelines for internal arrangements beyond naming Dr Kumar as acting leader. It also did not indicate whether Dr Vakamocea would remain involved with the association in any capacity. Members and observers will be watching how the acting presidency shapes the association’s advocacy and professional engagement in the months ahead as the organisation prepares for the 2026 elections.
