A resident of Narara Village in Ra has been sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his daughter’s boyfriend, Saimoni Virai, in 2022. Maika Nasara Bavou, 55, was found guilty by the High Court in Ba after a disturbing series of events that led to Virai’s tragic death.

Court records indicate that Virai had been in a clandestine relationship with Bavou’s daughter, Litia Nasara, for three years, unbeknownst to Bavou. On the day of the incident, when Virai called out to Litia to come outside, she urged him to escape, prompting him to hide near a water tank. Unfortunately, Bavou discovered him and began a vicious assault.

The attack escalated as Bavou restrained Virai by tying his hands and feet behind his back. He continued the beating with a guava stick before placing the unconscious victim on a horse, ostensibly to take him to the police station. However, during the journey, Bavou diverted to a remote location where he committed the heinous act of tying a nylon rope around Virai’s neck and securing it to a tree branch. As the horse moved, Virai was left hanging and succumbed to his injuries.

Bavou showed no remorse, leaving Virai’s body suspended from the tree while he returned home and falsely claimed that Virai had taken the horse and departed. In a judgment made last year, Justice Samuela Qica ordered Bavou to serve a minimum of 18 years before any possibility of a pardon could be considered, underscoring the severity of the crime.

This case highlights the tragic consequences of violence and the importance of addressing domestic relationships with awareness and sensitivity. While the community grapples with this incident, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and support for those in potentially dangerous situations.
