Fiji is actively engaged in high-level global aviation discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, currently representing the nation at the Changi Aviation Summit in Singapore. This significant three-day event, taking place from February 1 to 3, has gathered over 400 participants, including aviation ministers, directors-general, chief executives, and senior industry leaders from across the globe, notably featuring a strong presence from Pacific Island nations.
During the summit, Minister Gavoka participated in crucial discussions with aviation ministers from Pacific Small Island States as well as Mr. Toshiyuki Onuma, President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council. The focus of these talks was on enhancing regional air connectivity, preparing for the upcoming fourth Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting, and addressing the shared challenges that Pacific aviation faces, particularly in terms of resilience and sustainability.
In addition, Gavoka took part in a ministerial panel titled “Creating Growth in a Disruptive World: Opportunities, Challenges, and Collaboration,” where he articulated Fiji’s strategy of leveraging aviation as a vital economic lifeline. He underscored the pressing necessity of improving regional access, bolstering operational resilience, and advancing environmental sustainability. Furthermore, he advocated for ongoing technical assistance to support Pacific nations in developing and adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Gavoka highlighted that this support is crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change while ensuring that air connectivity in the Pacific remains affordable and reliable in the long term. Such initiatives not only promise to strengthen aviation infrastructure but also aim to foster economic resilience and sustainability in the region, ultimately benefiting the wider Pacific community.
