The Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Mara has urged the government, traditional leaders, and religious organizations to come together in a united front against the growing drug crisis in Fiji. He expressed deep concern over recent drug busts across the nation, viewing them as a significant threat to the future of the country’s youth.

In a compelling statement, Ratu Tevita emphasized that inaction is no longer viable. “A comprehensive government Strategy and Action Plan is imperative to safeguard all Fijians and restore hope for our young people,” he declared. He warned that the increasing rate of drug-related offenses jeopardizes the foundations of communities and the futures of young individuals.

Ratu Tevita highlighted that many youths are being drawn into illegal activities due to socio-economic factors such as poverty, inadequate education, and rising unemployment. He called for the establishment of clear pathways to employment and the incorporation of drug awareness programs into educational curriculums starting from primary school.

The Tui Nayau stressed the urgency of these measures, stating that failure to act could result in the loss of an entire generation to the temptations of crime. He advocated for a comprehensive community approach that intertwines cultural identity and values, urging youths to reconnect with their traditional roots. He noted that traditional leadership structures, like vuvale, tokatoka, mataqali, and yavusa, could play a vital role in mentoring and guiding young people.

Ratu Tevita praised organizations such as YADRA, which focus on supporting and rehabilitating marginalized youth, highlighting the need for collective efforts in addressing these pressing issues. His advocacy for collaboration across various sectors reflects a hopeful vision of a united community working together to protect and empower the next generation.
