Understanding Fiji’s maritime boundaries and fishing regulations is essential for every boat master to adhere to fisheries laws and maintain safety at sea. This critical lesson was emphasized by Captain Charles Pickering from the Pacific Center for Maritime Studies as he addressed 45 participants from Vanua Levu who are embarking on a two-month Boat Master Class 6 training in Labasa.

The course not only covers the fundamental aspects of maritime navigation but also emphasizes proper fish handling practices, focusing on the journey from catch to storage. This training equips maritime communities with practical skills aimed at enhancing safety, sustainability, and productivity in their fishing activities.

Captain Pickering stated that the training would prove beneficial by expanding the participants’ understanding of maritime zones and navigation limitations. “They have had limited training in this area, so this provides them with opportunities to gain more knowledge and learn different fishing techniques through formal schooling. Not only within the three nautical mile limit, but also beyond it,” he noted. Upon completion, graduates will be qualified to operate vessels up to 15 meters long and under 20 gross tonnage, opening new opportunities for them within the fishing industry.

Trainer Mikaele Labalaba highlighted the importance of understanding maritime laws and safe fishing management practices for small-scale fishers. He pointed out that the program allows participants to grasp basic maritime regulations, including the rules for yielding to larger vessels.

Significantly, this marks the first instance that Class 6 license training has been conducted at the community level in Fiji. Following this initiative, similar training programs are anticipated to be implemented in the Western and Central Divisions later this year, continuing to strengthen the capacity of local fishers and contributing to sustainable fishing practices throughout the nation.
