Fiji Firefighters Focus on Health Amid Rising Recruitment Interest

Firefighters are being reminded of the importance of prioritizing their health and safety, especially in light of the risks associated with their profession. On International Firefighters Day, the Chief Executive of the National Fire Authority (NFA), Puamau Sowane, acknowledged the global dangers faced by firefighters, highlighting that thousands are injured or even killed each year due to heart conditions, accidents during rescues, and hazardous exposures.

In Fiji specifically, the NFA has tragically lost 26 firefighters since 2007, with over half of these fatalities attributed to health-related issues such as heart attacks, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Additionally, since 2006, five firefighters have had to medically retire, primarily due to diabetes-related complications.

Sowane noted a concerning global trend of declining applicant interest in fire services due to these health risks. However, Fiji is experiencing the opposite trend, with thousands of applications being received during recruitment drives. This influx is promising for the future of the NFA as it aims for growth and excellence through collaborations with fire departments from Queensland, Taiwan, and Samoa, which include technical training initiatives.

The NFA is advancing its capabilities with the introduction of Urban Search and Rescue and Swift Water Rescue training and is focusing on enhancing inter-agency collaboration regarding disaster preparedness and response. The establishment of a new Paramedics Ambulance Department, which was noted in similar reports, aims to better prepare firefighters and beneficiaries of their services by providing improved medical emergency responses.

Through these efforts, the NFA demonstrates its commitment to improving the health and safety of its personnel, ensuring both firefighters and the communities they serve are better equipped for emergencies. This proactive approach not only reflects the importance of firefighter health but also signals a hopeful future for emergency response and community safety in Fiji.
