Empowering Change: Westpac Fiji’s Solo Moms Project Transforms Lives

Westpac Fiji is taking significant steps to empower single mothers in informal settlements by supporting the Solo Moms Project, which is executed by International Needs Fiji. The initiative aims to help these women, who often face steep social and economic challenges, acquire valuable skills that can provide new income-generating opportunities.

Under the guidance of Keni Baro, the Manager of Community and Engagement, training sessions have been established to teach essential trades including sewing, cooking, baking, and jewellery making. The goal is to foster independence and create sustainable livelihoods for these mothers. Baro emphasized the profound impact of equipping these women with practical skills that can enhance their financial situations, enabling them to manage their small businesses effectively.

In promoting additional knowledge in financial management, Baro shared key financial basics during the training sessions, highlighting the importance of sound financial practices that complement their newly acquired trade skills. This aligns with Westpac Fiji’s broader commitment to improving financial literacy among vulnerable communities, which was notably exemplified through its partnership with Save the Children Fiji to offer similar training programs focused on economic resilience and disaster preparedness.
