Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel has officially removed Cecil Browne from his position as chairman of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) and appointed former FCCC chief executive Joel Abraham in his place. This decision was announced on December 24.

In response to inquiries about the leadership change, Mr. Immanuel indicated that he would provide further clarification later in the day. The decision follows the FCCC’s recent announcement to increase tariffs for Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), which has generated significant public discourse.

Both Mr. Browne and Mr. Abraham have been contacted for comments regarding the leadership transition, but their responses were not available by the time of publication. The FCCC is crucial in regulating prices, safeguarding consumer interests, and ensuring competition within vital sectors.

Joel Abraham has a history with the FCCC, having previously served as its chief executive before taking on other senior roles in various government agencies. Details surrounding the reasoning behind this leadership change, particularly pertaining to its connection with the recent tariff adjustments, remain undisclosed.

As more information becomes available and responses are received, updates will be provided. The change in leadership at the FCCC may signify a shift in how consumer protection and competitive practices are managed moving forward, leaving many stakeholders eager for clarification and insight.
