The government is advancing its plans to create a medicinal cannabis industry focused entirely on exportation. This initiative aims to diversify Fiji’s economy, generate jobs, and establish the nation as a significant player in the rapidly growing global medicinal cannabis market.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, updated Parliament on the ongoing consultations and feasibility studies related to this new industry, emphasizing its substantial economic potential. He noted that the demand for medicinal cannabis products worldwide presents a unique opportunity for Fiji.
“The global medicinal cannabis industry is rapidly expanding, and Fiji is well-positioned to capitalize on this market,” said Mr. Kamikamica. He explained that the export-only focus is part of a broader strategy to widen Fiji’s economic base and cultivate new revenue sources. The initiative has garnered widespread public support, with 75% of participants in recent consultations endorsing the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes, particularly from male farmers aged 36 to 45.
This initiative is not merely about cannabis; it represents an opportunity to empower local communities, particularly in rural and maritime areas. It promises substantial agricultural development and job creation in regions that require economic enhancement.
Despite some delays in legislative revisions, Mr. Kamikamica anticipated that a bill would be presented in 2025. The government is dedicated to crafting legislation that is comprehensive and robust, addressing concerns about security and the potential for illicit activities. Plans are in place to implement strict security protocols modeled after successful international practices, ensuring the integrity of the industry.
Once established, the medicinal cannabis industry is expected to improve export revenues, create job opportunities, and enhance medicinal research capabilities, significantly benefiting Fiji’s economy in the long run.
In summary, this initiative holds great promise for transforming Fiji’s economy and improving the livelihoods of its citizens by tapping into a burgeoning global market while ensuring sustainable and secure practices. The government’s commitment to thorough consultations and robust legislation reflects a careful approach to this important economic development.
