The Fijian Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, has mandated the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to compile a comprehensive report on the ongoing review of electricity tariffs by Monday, December 29. This directive comes in light of the recent application submitted by Electricity Fiji Limited (EFL), along with requests from several other service providers for similar tariff considerations.

Minister Immanuel emphasized that the proposal from EFL necessitates thorough examination. He has instructed the FCCC to conduct additional consultations with stakeholders and enhance public awareness prior to reaching any final conclusions.

The Minister underscored the importance of striking a careful balance in tariff decisions, advocating for regulatory independence while also considering transparency and the realities faced by consumers. He delineated three fundamental principles to navigate this process, which include acknowledging the role of the regulator, ensuring discipline and transparency within the regulatory framework, and taking into account the lived experiences of consumers.

“All three matter equally in ensuring fair, transparent, and inclusive outcomes for the people of Fiji,” Hon. Immanuel stated, highlighting a commitment to equitable practices in the electricity sector. This underscores a proactive approach towards consumer advocacy, aiming for a tariff review process that is both thorough and reflective of the population’s needs.
