Fiji concluded its participation in the HSBC Cape Town 7s tournament on a high note, securing third place after a commanding 47-10 victory over Spain in the bronze medal playoff.
Under the guidance of coach Osea Kolinisau, Fiji fell short of advancing to the gold medal final after a narrow loss to France, finishing with a score of 19-17 in that match. However, the team bounced back strongly in the playoff against Spain, demonstrating their skill and determination.
In a dominant display, Fiji scored seven tries, showcasing their offensive prowess and seizing opportunities presented by the Spanish team’s unforced errors. Every player on the field contributed to the scoring, with Joji Nasova, Filipe Sauturaga, Jeremaia Matana, George Bose, Terio Veilawa, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Vuiviwa Naduvalo each finding the try line. Nasova and Teba contributed with a conversion each, while Sauturaga and Veilawa added two conversions each to their tally.
Spain managed to score two tries in the first half through Jeremy Trevithick but were unable to keep pace with Fiji’s relentless attack.
This performance not only highlights Fiji’s resilience after their earlier defeat but also sets a strong foundation for future tournaments, reminding fans of their potential and skill in the sevens format. As they look ahead, there is optimism for their continued growth and success on the world stage.
