The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has issued a strong warning to traders against engaging in price gouging and unfair trade practices as families prepare for the back-to-school shopping season. This alert comes in light of the Government’s recent rollout of a $200 assistance program aimed at supporting families during this busy shopping period.

FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta emphasized that the surge in consumer demand associated with back-to-school shopping does not justify any form of price inflation, misleading advertising, or misrepresentation of products. She noted that any trader caught violating these regulations will face immediate enforcement actions under the FCCC Act 2010.

The Commission oversees the pricing of essential school items, including stationery and textbooks, under the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) Order. This legislation establishes strict profit margins for both wholesalers and retailers to maintain fair pricing practices. In a bid to ensure compliance, the FCCC has ramped up its monitoring efforts, conducting over 180 inspections and surveillance activities since December, focusing on key items like school bags, lunch boxes, stationery, and textbooks.

Jiuta also mentioned that the FCCC has already completed two rounds of price surveys to establish baseline costs, with plans for a third round set for the coming week. Additionally, she urges parents and guardians to be vigilant while shopping to avoid falling victim to frequent school voucher scams that typically emerge during this season.

Consumers are encouraged to compare prices, verify promotional claims, check product labels, retain receipts, and report any suspected price gouging or unfair practices to the FCCC. Jiuta highlighted that the Commission’s enforcement efforts are designed to ensure that the Government’s financial assistance reaches the families who need it, rather than being exploited by unscrupulous traders.

This focus on consumer protection and fair trading practices not only fosters a more equitable shopping environment but also reinforces the commitment to support families during the back-to-school season.
