The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has responded firmly to allegations suggesting that construction work at the Nasinu Cemetery is responsible for flooding in the Naqiliso Settlement. The FCS has characterized these claims as based on misinformation and maintains that the evidence supports their position.
In a comprehensive statement, the FCS clarified that assertions linking their construction activities to the flooding are unfounded. They underscored that the project was preceded and accompanied by extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including contractors, environmental experts, the Fiji Roads Authority, the Lands Department, and the Nausori Town Council. Community leaders were also engaged, particularly after reports of flooding emerged.
The FCS highlighted the fact that the Naqiliso Settlement is informal and lacks an adequate drainage system. They attributed the flooding issues primarily to the discharge of wastewater and sewage into a drainage system that has deteriorated over time due to illegal dumping of rubbish, including plastics and household waste, which have contributed to blockages.
FCS emphasized that all necessary statutory approvals, including an Environmental Impact Assessment and town council permits, were secured before commencing the construction project. Contractors adhered strictly to the approved designs and survey plans.
Furthermore, the FCS reported that certain structures in the settlement, including bathrooms and piping, were found to infringe upon their land boundaries as determined by a registered surveyor. Consequently, the Lands Department has issued a 14-day notice to residents, following the expiration of an earlier 30-day notification.
Once these encroachments are resolved, the FCS plans to enhance the drainage system. They are also intending to collaborate with health authorities to address the problem of accumulated rubbish within their compound. Additionally, the FCS is formulating a long-term strategy in conjunction with the Fiji Roads Authority and the Lands Department to clear encroachments on nearby government road reserve land.
In their statement, the FCS expressed a commitment to ongoing engagement with surrounding communities, while encouraging media outlets to provide well-rounded perspectives in their coverage. This reflects a desire to foster mutual understanding and address community concerns proactively.
