The Consumer Council of Fiji is raising alarms over unethical practices prevalent within several businesses, particularly those in the construction and bridal sectors. These businesses, according to Chief Executive Seema Shandil, have been exploiting consumer trust by using different names on social media to dodge consumer protection regulations and accountability. This has made it challenging for consumers to track their dealings and seek redress for grievances.

A notable offender, Melbourne Works, operating under the alternative identity of Scientific Design & Build PTE Limited, has amassed seven consumer complaints this year, resulting in losses amounting to $28,990. Meanwhile, Raj Roofing has been subject to five complaints totaling $1,036. The complaints against these entities range from incomplete or abandoned projects to subpar materials, unjustified fees, and a lack of proper documentation like receipts or contracts.

Furthermore, the bridal and fashion industry is also facing scrutiny for issues such as undelivered products and misleading advertising. Similar problems were evident across diverse sectors in previous instances highlighted by the Consumer Council of Fiji. Issues in sectors like electronics, online shopping, and dental procedures have shown a persistent pattern of consumer rights violations leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

The Council has previously documented a rise in consumer grievances, emphasizing the necessity for improved transparency, stricter consumer protection laws, and a proactive approach to holding businesses accountable. It has also been suggested that empowering consumers through education and advocacy can enhance awareness and strengthen market practices.

Current and past patterns underscore the critical need for rigorous oversight and enhancement of consumer protection mechanisms. The Council urges consumers to actively report any unethical practices to facilitate enforcement actions and protect consumer interests.

In light of these ongoing challenges, Chief Executive Seema Shandil of the Consumer Council insists on continued vigilance and collaboration with stakeholders to reinforce business fairness and consumer trust within the marketplace. This proactive approach seeks not only to address immediate consumer grievances but also to foster a healthier and more transparent business environment across Fiji.
