Parts of Fiji are currently experiencing significant rainfall as Tropical Cyclone Urmil moves southeast past the archipelago. The Category Two cyclone was located west-southwest of Nadi early on Sunday, and its associated rain bands are anticipated to affect the entire country through Wednesday.

Fiji’s Meteorological Service has issued a warning regarding the likelihood of flash flooding across the nation, particularly as water levels are rising in most rivers and creeks. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to take precautions, which may include relocating to safer ground during daylight hours.

The forecast from the Fiji Meteorological Service predicts occasional rainfall, with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected at times. Localized heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding in areas that are already prone to flooding. The forecast confidence is considered to be moderate to high.

In the past 24 hours, several locations have recorded significant rainfall: Monasavu at 60.5mm, Dobuilevu at 62.5mm, Penang at 52.0mm, Lautoka at 59.0mm, Tavua at 88.5mm, Navua at 59.5mm, RKS Lodoni at 51.5mm, Nadarivatu at 132.0mm, Waikubukubu at 92.0mm, and Rarawai at 58.0mm.

The potential consequences of the current weather conditions include flash flooding in low-lying informal settlements, disruptions to businesses, and challenges at Irish crossings that may lead to traffic delays. Urban areas with poor drainage could experience surface flooding, and wet roads combined with reduced visibility during heavy rain raise the risk of road accidents.

As the country faces these challenges, communities are urged to remain vigilant and prepared, highlighting the importance of safety measures during severe weather events.
