Fiji’s lightweight champion Mikaele Ravalaca will not participate in the upcoming Super Welterweight Title bout this Saturday as part of the Zeg Kings Boxing Promotion program. Promoter Naroon Buksh made this announcement following the recent sponsorship deal with LICI. Ravalaca was set to face John Ingram at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, but has withdrawn due to injuries sustained in a brawl. Buksh confirmed that Ravalaca shared images of his injuries, leading to the decision to prioritize the boxer’s health and safety.
Buksh stated, “The same title fight will continue, and we have given the opportunity to Ratu Rakuro.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of athletes, stressing that financial concerns are secondary to their safety. “A boxer’s life is precious. We don’t want to repeat what happened last year,” he added, likely referencing the tragic incident involving boxer Ubaid Haider.
Despite this setback, the event will feature an action-packed card with ten professional bouts, including two fights for World Boxing Association (WBA) titles and approximately six exhibition matches. Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou is scheduled to arrive to compete in the WBA Oceania super bantamweight title fight against Junior Binnu Singh. Weigh-ins are set for Friday at Ratu Sukuna Park, with exhibition matches starting at 4:30 PM and professional fights at 6 PM.
Buksh expressed gratitude towards LICI for their sponsorship, stating that securing financial support eases the burdens of organizing such expansive events. General Manager Pradeep Shanoy highlighted that LICI has diversified its sponsorship efforts, supporting various sports, including darts, football, and rugby.
The commitment to safety and the increasing investment in the boxing scene signifies a bright future for the sport in Fiji. As the anticipation builds for the event, fans can look forward to an evening of thrilling matches, showcasing the talent and determination of local fighters and the sport’s resilience in the face of challenges.
