The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) is gearing up for a significant championship event scheduled for next year, expecting a substantial turnout from both local and international competitors. National head coach Cam Todd has expressed optimism about securing a larger venue, following challenges encountered during the recent FABA Golden Gloves championships held earlier this month.
Todd noted the intention to collaborate with the Fiji Sports Council to secure a venue that can accommodate the anticipated crowds, with the Vodafone Arena being highlighted as a potential ideal location. This upcoming competition is expected to attract a strong contingent from Australia and New Zealand, with Australia already confirming the participation of 25 to 30 boxers, and New Zealand sending a sizeable team. There are also hopes that Samoa will be joining, setting the stage for an exciting two-day tournament.
The year 2026 is shaping up to be particularly busy for FABA, with major events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympics on the horizon. The upcoming championship will serve as a vital platform for local boxers to hone their skills in preparation for these prestigious events. Todd emphasized the dual purpose of the tournament, which aims to nurture junior boxers while providing elite competitors with necessary competitive experience ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
In addition to the championships, Todd has outlined plans for coaching workshops and joint training sessions with other participating countries during the week of the competition, further enriching the experience for Fijian athletes.
Details regarding the date of the competition will be announced soon, and anticipation is building within the boxing community as the event promises to enhance the development of boxing in Fiji. The FABA’s proactive approach highlights a commitment to fostering talent and ensuring that Fijian boxers are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
